What's Your ITN Number? PDF Print E-mail

How To Find Your Number?

To facilitate the rating of players the ITF have developed a Description of Standards and an objective On Court Assessment both of which can be used to rate players in the absence of competition results.

The ITN Description of Standards provides a benchmark for determining a player's level of tennis ( 1 - 10 ) and includes:-

  • the general characteristics of various playing levels
  • the five-game / tactical situations of tennis (e.g. serving, returning, both at baseline, approaching, passing) and
  • the game-style of the player.

MBPSPORTS run comprehensive ITN Assessment/Workshop programs. Programs are scheduled according to player ability ie., ITN number.  See below to get an indication of where you fit.

Which Category Do You Fit Into?

ITN 1 - 4          Elite/High Performance Player

  • 1-2   A player with this ranking holds, or is capable of holding an ATP/WTA ranking.
  • 3-4   A player with this ranking has exceptional control the tennis ball, has a great feel for shots, can analyse and exploit an opponents weakness, plays well under   pressure and has great footwork and balance.

ITN 5 - 8          Intermediate Player

  • 5-6  A player with this ranking has good consistency (dependable strokes), directional control and depth on forehand and backhand, can serve consistently and has sound footwork.
  • 7-8  A player with this ranking is fairly consistent when hitting moderately paced ground strokes, but is not comfortable playing all strokes. A singles match will be played almost exclusively from the baseline.  When playing other players of the same ability, this player can sustain a short rally of slow pace with moderate consistency. The serve is developing a rhythm and second serve is substantially slower than the first.

ITN 8 - 10       Recreational/Starter Player

  • A player with this ranking is in the development stage of tennis and are primarily learning simple tennis coordination tasks. They are familiar with the basic groundstrokes and serving motion. Double faults are quite common and the serving ball toss is not consistent and uncontrolled.
